How PDT works
Photodynamic therapy is a medical treatment that uses light and a photosensitizing agent to help destroy cancerous or abnormal cells. It involves using a light‑sensitive medicine combined with light therapy to target abnormal cells in a specific area.
PDT follows a two‑step process. First, the photosensitizing agent is administered, accumulating in the target cells. Then, when exposed to a specific light source, the agent reacts by generating reactive oxygen species that damage or help destroy these cells. Following the procedure, healing typically takes between two and six weeks, potentially resulting in healthier skin. Your healthcare provider, Dr Alison Jamieson, will advise you on aftercare to support optimal recovery.
PDT can be used to treat various conditions, including skin cancer, acne, and sun damage. As a non‑invasive treatment, it is often a preferred option for early skin cancer treatment. Individual results may vary.

Your consultation
An initial consultation is required to determine if PDT is right for you. During this consultation, we will review your overall health, discuss any superficial skin lesions (such as actinic keratoses or basal cell carcinomas), and address any other skin concerns you may have.
This personalised discussion helps us develop a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs and ensure PDT is the appropriate choice.
Due to the personalised nature of the treatment, Dr Alison Jamieson will need to discuss your health and well-being with you beforehand. Once we have identified the issue to be treated, and determined that you are a good candidate, we can proceed with your photodynamic therapy.
Benefits of PDT
Compared to other forms of medical treatment, PDT offers many benefits. The exact benefits will depend on the issues being treated and the individual patient. The procedure is:
- A minimally invasive approach with no need for surgery and minimal scarring
- Localised treatment that specifically targets abnormal cells while sparing surrounding tissue
- A shorter recovery time compared to other treatment methods
- The ability to repeat the treatment if necessary for continued improvement
Individual results may vary.
